A closer analogy is a "scientist" claiming that if we turn up the thermostat in the library by 1 degree, a particular book in stack C will burst into flames by 5:00 PM next Friday.
It is not that most people don't understand what a minor shift in global temperature will do, it is that nobody knows what it will do. But some people pretend to know. Others think they know, but that is only because they are stupid.
