The problem is that you've got to check-out of your hotel by 11:00 but your flight isn't for 12 hours. One nice thing: Your hotel doesn't have to be in LA, or even very close. We stayed in Lone Pine, which is 3 & 1/2 hours away. Still, lots of time to kill. You could do something strenuous or something that gets you dirty, like go for a hike or go to the beach, but then you have to either fly like that or find a day pass to a gym and get washed up there. Or you could do something civilized and clean, like go to a museum. This is a really good way to take in a museum--you're not in a hurry, in fact, you're trying to kill time, so you can be more leisurely--relax and take in the grounds and the art with no rush.
We went to the Getty and they closed at 5:30, but by the time we got to our car and got out of there, it was 6:00. Perfect timing to get dinner. Again, take your time, enjoy the meal. Finally, gas-up the rental and turn it in. Still plenty of time, even when the shuttle driver skips your terminal and you have to make a 2nd go-round.
There was plenty of time for a libation at the gate, but this is a rookie mistake--wait for the service on the plane. The alcohol will hit when you're seated and ready for a nap. I took the next day (the day we arrived in Boston, off but my wife was able to put-in a full day of work.
