Alternate Route
On the way back home from our stay at Shadow Lake VT, I decided to explore a bit. I had run an out and back a couple of days earlier in which I came close to trying a loop--even though I was unsure if a loop was really possible. Once I got back to the lake house, I mapped it out and I could have made a loop, but was glad I didn't try: It would have been almost two miles further and I very likely would have gotten lost.
On the way home, I thought, 'why not see what it would have looked like?'
For the first couple of miles, it looked great! Rolling hills of beautiful scenery--fall colors and green pastures. Then it turned to a very primitive one-lane road. Also, it was pretty steeply down hill. We were in an all-wheel drive Subaru Impreza, so I thought there was a good chance of getting back up the hill, if need be, but I wasn't looking forward to that being necessary. Then, this:
The water was about 15 inches deep and the feature was about 100 feet long. There was some current, but not enough to matter. Had I been driving our GMC Yukon, I doubt I would have slowed down. As it was, I stopped and scouted the entire length of the path. The depth looked uniform and I could scout the whole way due to the wooden foot bridge (the white rectangle in the middle, left).
My daughter filmed the whole episode, so hopefully I can link to that later.
