The missing letter could have been an R, C, H or M.  L was already used.  I'd need a word with two Rs to eliminate the R, so MUNCH would have revealed that C was the missing letter and I'd have made it in 5.

It looks as if the stars formed an even grid, in times when the number of states could be multiplyed by two numbers close together.  20, 24, 28, 30, 35 and 48.

Wow Google, Just Wow

 Search Miss Alabama and this is what you get:

Two of the 10 images here are of Miss Alabama USA.  Six of them are of a woman who won the Crown for Miss Alabama in something called, the National American Miss pageant

I suppose this raises the issue of the "real" Miss Alabama contest.  Traditionally, it's a beauty contest, so either the "original" has suffered from ideological capture or the Miss fat Alabama is an upstart.  I'm pretty sure Google doesn't see it this way.
