Back in 1997 I purchased my first nice car, a BMW 318ti hatchback. It was $21,390 134 HP (41,710) in 2024 Dollars. What I really dreamed about was the 1997 BMW M3 $39,380 240 HP (76,7921) in 2024 Dollars, but I really couldn't justify the expense right as we were starting to have kids.
Skip ahead to 2024. I bought a Subaru WRX $33,855 272 HP All wheel drive vehicle. Inflation adjusted, it's actually less expensive than the very much inferior 318ti, which don't get me wrong, I loved at the time.
In case you think comparing Subaru and BMW is too much apples to oranges--lets compare M3 to M3. Inflation adjusted, the 2024 cost the same as the 1997! And the new M3 has performance that no production car in 1997 offered. You'd have to have gone to something exotic, like a Ferrari.
