Talk About Self-Refuting

 Link

Early on Saturday, October 7th, Palestinian resistance fighters broke through Israel's siege of Gaza. In response, Israel has declared total war against the people of Gaza, completely cutting off access to food, water, and electricity, while bombing the Strip and killing entire families. This attack on Gaza takes place after 75 years of settler-colonial violence conducted by the Israeli state. This panel will explore the historical context that led to the current moment, the dynamics currently at play, and the possibilities for building international solidarity for Palestinian liberation.

So, fighters broke through "Israel's siege of Gaza."  but then Israel reacted by "completely cutting off access to food, water, and electricity"?  What kind of siege allows access to food water and electricity?  What did the "resistance fighters"  break-through to get?  It clearly wasn't for food, electricity or water.

What the "resistance fighters" did was murder, rape and kidnap a bunch of civilians.  One would think everyone would be in favor of a siege, which cuts off the supply of murder, rape and kidnap  victims.  Apparently, there are people who feel victimized by such a limitation on their freedom.

Screenshot in case they take the event down.

Not What It Seems

This looks like one of the, "what are they thinking" mistake meme pictures we see in ads all the time.

It's actually a really good, energy saving idea.  You see, this room, which was once a screened-in porch, has been closed-in and is now used as an office.  We had hoped that the window you see in the picture plus a door, would allow plenty of heat from the rest of the house into the room.  To our disappointment, this was not so and we resorted to space heaters.  Problem:  It was really showing up on our electric bill.

A 1,500 Watt space heater gives us 5,115 BTU of heat, but the AC unit you see is rated at 5000 BTU and consumes 515 Watts, so the total BTU is 5,000 plus (515 W)(3.41BTU/W) = 1756 for a total of 6756 BTU.  So, instead of getting 3.41 BTU per Watt with the space heater, I get 13.12 BTU per Watt with the AC unit.

Yes, I'm accomplishing this by taking heat from one room and moving it to another.  But, we aren't using the living room during working hours and I don't run the AC after working hours.  So the heat is being moved from where it isn't needed, to where it is needed.

An additional benefit is that while 1,500 Watts is about as high as you can go with a space heater, I can use a larger AC unit if the 5,000 BTU unit isn't enough when it gets really cold outside.

646 Days in a row

I played Wordle 646 days in a row and lost 20 times.  On the 647th day, I was too busy and didn't realize I hadn't done this task until the next morning, so I didn't bother playing again until now.

Wordle 647, but the first since this time last week.

Most of the exhibit was "meh" but I liked this.

Male and female, grim or surprised.  They seem to be arrayed in one of the few possible ways which doesn't seem systematic.*

The exhibit was called, Alfredo Boulton: Looking at Venezuela, 1928–1978

*I went through a dozen permutations (out of 24 possible) and each systematic one could be matched with a cognate unsystematic version.
