"Did Trump genuinely know he had lost the election?"

This assumes a fact which hasn't been established: Did Trump lose the election?  Polls have shown that more than half of Republicans think Biden won only through cheating and something like 1/3 of Democrats agree.

As such, how is it bizzare for Trump to think he won?  If he honestly thinks he won, he is under no obligation to "play nice" and pretend he lost.

There certainly were shenanigans in the last election, were they decisive?  Nobody really knows.  The price of promoting and allowing cheating is that if you "win", some fraction of the people will view the victory as illegitimate.  This is the price to be paid for victory at any cost.
