How did you come by these strange beliefs?

 I got them the hard way:  By questioning and logic.

I once had a woman accuse me of believing something, which I did happen to believe. I was dumbfounded. Why would I be embarrassed to believe something I think is true?

She was proud of believing the same things, her betters believed. This is why she couldn't defend her positions.
