In 1492...

And in 2008 Google commemorates....Paddington Bear.

Meanwhile, the kids are off from school today since, as we all know, public school teachers are such huge fans of Columbus. Their minds are so full of admiration for the bravery and intellect of the great Italian explorer, they couldn't be expected to concentrate on mundane math, reading & etc. Best to just keep them home today.

We should all explore how he treated and thought of Native Americans and Indians. Despite his accomplishments, I'm sure there's some stains on his record and this should be examined and put into context if true.

I think that the problem today is that ALL of the examination of Columbus has to do with his faults--of which he had his fair share.

He is probably the single most important individual of the last 1000 years in the changes which his efforts catalyzed. We take for granted that Western European notions dominate the planet. It was not inevitable that this would happen before 1492.
