I used to drive to Whidbey Island sometimes for drill weekends--there was an airlift from Spokane--but I almost always drove when I had an ATD. About half the time the ATD was held at NAS Whidbey Island, so it made sense to have a car, but the other half of the time, it still made sense--there might be an air-lift there but not an air lift back. A lot of the time, I took Steven's pass or the North Cascades pass because, while I-90 was fast, it dumps into I-5 much further south than the other two.
On my trip over for an ATD where we'd be flying to Key West, I stopped at Grand Coulee Dam and bought a post card. My plan was to send it to my folks, from Key West, with the message--They have one of these things out in Florida too!
I was too busy while in Florida and forgot to send the card.
